This article is for the individual eager to take climate action but is confused and overwhelmed about how to do so.
First of all, don't put pressure on yourself. You can't do it yourself, we all need to do it as a collective. That takes us to the main point in this article: Don't think as an individual; think as a collective, specifically in the form of organizations.
The current funnel - the informal system people follow to decide how to take climate action - is broken.
Many don't take climate action
Some are conscious but stuck believing it's their consumer responsibility. We need to shift the responsibility away from consumers to achieve real, systemic change.
👉 Examples: recycle, environmental-friendly diet, using public transport
Some figure out they can spend their free time volunteering for NGOs - this is great, but most people need to make a living first, then spend their excess time volunteering.
👉 Example: Environmental activist @ Greenpeace
Some realize they can make a living taking climate action by specializing in making corporations more sustainable. Not for the faint of heart, usually a slow process as traditional corporations have deep roots and difficulties changing.
👉 Example: Sustainability Manager @ Bank
Some understand they can drive systemic change by working in Government or for IGOs. But policies take time to implement and aren't always progressive. It's also indirect action, as private organizations have to act on these policies.
👉 Example: Official at EU or UN
Few figure out they can take professional climate action applying their skills for impact companies driving real change.
👉 Example: Any profession @ Stegra, Doconomy, Klimato, Aira, Climeon, Normative.io, CorPower Ocean, and many many many more examples...
Here's where the action happens! 🚀
Can I apply my skills to climate impact companies?
👇 Else:
Do I want to specialize in making corporations sustainable?
👇 Else:
Is politics & IGOs something for me?
👇 Else:
Do I have time in my life to volunteer for NGOs?
👇 Else:
If I can or cannot do any of the above, what can I do as a consumer?
